This page updated last on June 23, 2017

On July 18, 2014 we lost one of our Kobushi-Do students Joshia Horkavy due to cancer. Josiah was a great student and very eager to learn. Please see his picture at the bottom of the page and other information. On July 30, 2007 Lee Brothers a dear friend and a member of our own school passed away. At the bottom of this page is a picture memorial for our student, friend and brother in the martial arts, Walter Lee Brothers Jr. If you would like to donate to Kira's scholarship fund, this is the address. All donations to the family should be made to the following address: The name of the fund is: State Employee's Credit Union c/o Walter Lee Brothers, Jr. Scholarship Fund 28 Oxholm Dr. Garner, NC. 27529. Thanks, Master/Shidoshi-Ho Mark Murdock Pictured above is the Late Great Grandmaster Robert "Bob" Edwards. This picture was taken at the 2003 World Head of Family Sokeship Council International Hall of Fame, just three months before his passing. We really enjoyed the company of Grandmaster "Bob" Edwards. He was always very nice and willing to talk to anyone. He was always available for conversation and was always willing to give advice. He and Soke Casarez were like brothers, Soke Casarez and Grandmaster Edwards were the best of friends and had been friends for over 40 years. I considered Grandmaster Bob Edwards a good friend. I knew him for nearly 20 years. During that 20 years he would come into Soke's dojo to hang out and talk. I was there when he awarded Soke his 10th Degree Black Belt. During eight of the early years that I attended the World Head of Family Sokeship Council, Grandmaster Bob Edwards was always there. Grandmaster Frank Sanchez recognized the passing of Grandmaster Robert "Bob" Edwards at the 2004 W.H.F.S.C. Hall of Fame event. Bob's passing was very difficult for Soke Casarez. I will always remember all the good times we had at the Hall of Fame event, and the trips out to eat at the TGI Friday's restaurant. He will be greatly missed by everyone, especially me. Grandmaster Mark Murdock

Shihan Ed "Papasan" Martin passed away this moring, 07-14-17. I trained under Ed for three years in the late 2000's. He will be miss by all.

Ed and myself during a seminar at his farm in PA. in 2006.

In the picture above is Lee at his happiest. Lee was always happy to train with his daughter Kira. Lee and Kira had one of the closest parent and child relationships I've ever seen.

Lee Brothers Jr. started with Southern School of Martial Arts and Rives Edge Buninkan Dojo In late 2004 shortly after his daughter Kira started in the Kobushi-Do class. Lee was very devoted to the school and to his co-students and Sensei. Lee many times went above and beyond normal to assist and help the school. Lee was a very devoted husband and father and always put his family first.

There were so many occasions that Lee would come in early to class or drop by the house just to discuss how we could better the school and help it grow.

Lee was a student to be proud of. A very hard worker. Lee was a 3rd Degree Brown Belt in Manabi-Masho Jujitsu and a 1st Degree in Ninjutsu (Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu).

In January Lee had joined former SSMA/REBD assistant instructor Melissa Hale and formed the Bujinkan Buki training group in Smithfield, NC. and then started to help in the instruction for their newly formed training group. In June 07 Lee's focus had taken a turn toward all Bujinkan and he had just dropped from our class to help Melissa full time, however Lee was still considered a student and a member of our SSMA/REBD martial arts family.

I awarded Lee a Shodan in Manabi-Masho Ju-Jitsu "posthumously" as a token of my appreciation for all he has done for our school in the past. His certificate was awarded to his wife Angela and his daughter Kira Saturday, August 4, 2007. Lee is now recognized as a Shodan in both Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu, Ninjutsu and in Manabi-Masho Jujitsu.

Grandmaster Mark Murdock.

Lee, with his friend Jon and daughter Kira after receiving their Shodans in Ninjutsu in 2006 at REBD, now known as SSMA Bujinkan Dojo.

Lee was always very supportive of his daughter Kira. This picture was taken duing the last part of her Kobushi-Do Shodan test earlier this spring "2007".

Josiah Horkavy passed due to cancer. Josiah was a regular student of the Kobushi-Do class in 2012 and was a such a great student. He was so eager to learn and was a pleasure to have in my class. His brother Tyler also trained in the adult class.

Josiah had to quit training when he became sick with a form of cancer. Josiah passed away on the evening of July 18, 2014. Since returning from treatments in Germany, he was able to spend time with his family at home, at Lake Tahoe, and after a brief hospitalization last week he was able to go home and passed in the company of his family and friends. I'm very sadden by this and the whole Horkavy family is in my prayers. Please pray for them.

The Horkavy family is accepting donations to help with the costs of treatment. There is a lot that insurance doesn't cover. Jane Olsen, has set up a fund for the uncovered medical expenses. Please help the Horkavy's by donating. Please send donations to: Fund for Josiah Guilford Savings Bank 1 Park Street Guilford, CT 06437

Mark Gottlieb our very first student passed away in July 2015. He was a good friend and a great martial artist. Our second student was Jackie Kilgus. They met while training and eventually married and had three children. I'm very sadden to learn this and prayers go out to Jackie and the kids. You can donate to
