Above: This picture was taken in 1996 at Grandmaster Casarez's Dojo in Ohio. Former student, Mark Gottlieb. was the first official student of Southern School of Martial Arts in 1996 and was the second North Carolina student to be taught Manabi-Masho Jujitsu. The very first student "Tony Wilson" was a private student that I began teaching in April 1994. 1994 to 1996 was the unofficial beginning of SSMA, SSMA became an official school in May 1996.

Below:
Ed and Doug they started training in late 1996 and early 1997.
in the beginning we trained in homes, community centers and outdoors.

We began teaching Manabi-Masho Ju-Jitsu in April of 1994. We had Two private students through March of 2006 at that time we began to have more students interested in the training.
On May 26, 1994 Southern School of Martial Arts was created and began teaching a group of four in the Willow Spring area of Wake County, NC. In July of 1998 we moved the school to Johnston County at 69 Sallie Dr. off Hyw. 210.
In November of 2000 we moved the school to downtown Smithfield at 335 East Market St.
In October 2001 we created a new childrens martial art called "Kobushi-Do" The Little Warrior Way.
In late 2002 we started officially teaching Bujinkan Ninjutsu and in March of 2003 we officially named the new Bujinkan school, Rivers Edge Bujinkan Dojo.
In March 2003 the school fell on hard times and was closed for a brief four month period. In July 2003 Southern School of Martial Art was restructored and reopened with the addition of the new Rivers Edge Bujinkan Dojo, at a new location at Paker St. in Smithfield.
In February 2004 Southern School of Martial Arts was moved to the current location at McGee's Crossroads.
In March of 2006 we opened a second location for our childrens art "Kobushi-Do" at Langley Gymnastics and Fun Center.
Southern School of Martial Arts continues to grow and improve. We want to thank all of our students past and present for being students of Southern School of Martial Arts. We look forward to the future and the friendship of future students.
Thank you,
Master/Shidoshi-Ho Mark Murdock, Founder of North Carolina's Manabi-Masho Ju-Jitsu and Founder of Southern School of Martial Arts and Rivers Edge Bujinkan Dojo.

This picture taken at the Parker St. SSMA location in the summer of 2003
In March 2003 the 335 E. Market St. location fell on some hard times after 9/11 and the start of the Iraq war. It had to be closed due to finacial situations and due to a personal family situation. SSMA had a brief 4 month closure in North Carolina. During this time I privately instructed classes in the Carleston, WV. area and started the Rivers Edge Bujinkan Dojo. We named the dojo due to the area we trained near. We trained near the banks of the Kanawa river. in June 2003 I returned to North Carolina and SSMA was reopened along with Rivers Edge Bujinkan Dojo in Smithfield, NC. at Parker St. We would train at that location until January 2004.

We trained outdoors often.
During this time Assistant Instructor Melissa Hale began training, along with Err, Clayton, Art and Chris.

2004 through early 2005

In February of 2004 we moved from the Parker St. location to our new location in the McGee's Crossroads area.

We converted this garage into a full working dojo. This would be the new SSMA and REBD location. It's still the current location of SSMA and REBD.

Melissa started her training at Southern School of Martial Arts and Rivers Edge Bujinkan Dojo in August of 2003 and trained here until December 2006 when she decided to train full time in the Bujinkan with another teacher. Melissa left us as a Shodan in Jujitsu and a Nidan in Kobushi-Do and a Nidan in Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu. Good luck to her in her future endeavors.
