More information about Manabi-Masho Ju-Jitsu and Southern School of Martial Arts

At Southern School of Martial Arts you can learn self defense and martial arts at any age. Our oldest black belt is 66 years old. You don't have to to be in perfect shape to learn. Anyone, of any age, size or fitness level can learn what I teach. I do make accommodations and waive certain techniques that a person may not be able to perform due to a physical limitation or a certain health condition. I've taught many people with physical limitations and health issues. You'll get some good exercise while learning what I teach, however it's not going to be an intense work out. We focus on martial arts and self defense, not excessive physical conditioning like other martial arts schools may require. If you want an intense work out, there's a Cross Fit at the other end of our building complex. Why not give us a try, many of the techniques we teach are easy to learn and require very little strength to perform. Grandmaster Murdock

A description of our Martial Art below.

Casarez-Ryu Manabi-Masho Ju-Jitsu is a Non-Sport Specialized Self Defense Martial Art

Casarez-Ryu Manabi-Masho means, "Casarez's School, Lets Learn" The Working Way. Manabi-Masho Ju-Jitsu was initialy concepted in 1968 by Founder Grandmaster John H. Casarez from traditional Japanese Hakko-Ryu Ju-Jitsu and a blend of Judo, Aikido and Karate and few Ninjutsu techniques. His thoughts were a blended martial art is more effective than one single martial art. Manabi-Masho Ju-Jitsu was internationally recognized in March, 1993. On December 31, 2017 Grandmaster Casarez retired and passed the Manabi-Masho Ju-Jitsu system to his Soke-Dai's Grandmaster Mark Murdock and Master Allen Wilson. On January 1, 2018 Grandmaster Mark Murdock and Master Allen Wilson became Soke of the system. On January 1, 2018 The system was renamed in creator John H. Casarez's honor to Casarez-Ryu Manabi-Masho Ju-Jitsu

Grandmaster Murdock's adaptation of Casarez-Ryu Manabi-Masho Ju-Jitsu adds even more Ninjutsu along with Eskrima, Kali and techniques from JKD, Krav Maga and Russian Martial Arts for real life self protection. It's a street wise martial art that is effective for defending yourself and others from real attacks from real attackers, including multiple attackers and attackers with weapons. In addition to our Martial Arts training students learn valuable life lessons like how to be honest and respectful to others while having integrity and honoring those who give knowledge.

With the increasing number of shootings in the country we now teach how to react to an active shooter and how to use offensive firearms tactical techniques to defend against an active shooter. Our Martial Art is a great supplement to "Conceal Carry" for the normal person without any hand to hand tactical experience.

Learn from a true expert in the field! Grandmaster Murdock has over 35 years of experience in Manabi-Masho Ju-Jitsu and now Soke of Casarez-Ryu Manabi-Masho Ju-Jitsu. GM Murdock also has nearly 30 years experience in several other martial art styles. Grandmaster Murdock is a 9th degree black belt and one of the highest ranking black belts in the Raleigh-Durham area. Grandmaster Murdock is a member of four Martial Art Halls of Fame and a member of the elite World Head of Family Sokeship Council.

Casarez-Ryu Manabi-Masho Ju-Jitsu is recognized internationally through the USA Martial Arts Hall of Fame, WHFSC, WASCA and USIMAA.

What is Casarez-Ryu Manabi-Masho?

Casarez-Ryu Manabi-Masho Ju-Jitsu is a Non-Sport Martial Art that is reality based, It's heavily blended with Ninjutsu, Aikido and Judo. It also has select techniques from Aiki-Jujutsu, JKD, Krav Maga, Eskrima and Kali.
There's no hard to learn forms or prearranged katas. Casarez-Ryu Manabi-Masho is free flowing without the complicated katas or forms common in Karate and Tae Kwon Do. In real life self defense situations katas are worthless in a real random attack. I teach much more than just how to punch and kick. Southern School of Martial Arts is not your ordinary martial arts school.

I don't teach MMA and and cage fighting either. In the real world, hopefully we're not going to be in a cage. In the streets you don't have to abide by any rules in a real life fight for your life. MMA in my opinion is similar to dog fighting. It's just brawling without any kind of moral training for the mind, body and spirit. It's just big entertainment for those who no nothing about, or care nothing about real martial arts. Usually they don't care about learning real martial arts either. My opinion may make you angry, but I've been in martial arts a very long time and this is not real martial arts. If you want MMA, we're not for you. You'll have to find a MMA gym.

We also teach a children's style called Kobushi-Do "The Little Warrior Way" (Jr. Casarez-Ryu Manabi-Masho Ju-Jitsu). This children's martial art is also taught without the hard to learn forms and katas and taught in a free flow way. There's no expensive equipment to buy or constant tournaments and competitions to have to travel to. We do have competitions at times in the dojo and students can go to competitions if they wish to do so. We teach students discipline, self respect, respect for others, how to be kind and helpful to others. They gain self confidence and self esteem and learn how valuable and important they are in society. Kobushi-Do is not an ordinary children's martial art, it's a blended martial art just like it's parent martial art Casrez-Ryu Manabi-Masho Ju-Jitsu. A blend of martial arts is more effective than one single martial art style.

In my opinion children should not be learning MMA and cage fighting. It teaches nothing but violence and bad morals.

Currently I teach 100% of all classes at the dojo. At my dojo you get a high ranking 9th degree black belt teaching all the classes.

Learn Multiple Styles of Martial Arts

We teach a blend of martial arts that comprises of several martial art styles. Our primary martial art is Casarez-Ryu Manabi-Masho Ju-Jitsu "Lets Learn" (John Casarez's The Working Way of Ju-Jitsu). Manabi-Masho is a non-sport martial art that has a very heavy base of classic Hakko-Ryu Ju-Jitsu, with Ninjutsu, Aikido and Judo blended in. We also combine several other techniques from other martial art styles (Escrima, Kali, JKD, Karate and few techniques from many other styles to numerous to mention) all to create a very effective martial art and self defense system.

Expert Level Experience Teaching Self Defense

My Goal as the Head Instructor Is:

To effectively teach self defense, martial arts and moral training to our students so they will be highly effective in self defense and martial arts, while being a good person and a merciful warrior with heart. GM Murdock

Our tuition rates:

We have very competitive tuition rates. Our tuition rates generally average $65.00 to $110.00 per month. The tuition price is based on the type of class, type of payment plan and how many hours the student trains per week and then figured into a monthly rate. We do have Family, Military, Police, Fire and EMS discounts. We'll happily match any competitors price within reason. At Southern School of Martial Arts you're getting a great deal on tuition with instruction from a Grandmaster, 9th Degree Black Belt with 35 years of experience. Grandmaster Murdock is the highest ranking black belt in the system and Soke of Casarez-Ryu Manabi-Masho Ju-Jitsu, now that Founder Grandmaster Casarez has retired. We also have a Soke in Ky, Master Allen Wilson. We're one of the very few schools in the area that has a high ranking instructor teaching nearly 100% of all the classes. Most schools give you a low ranking 1st, 2nd or 3rd degree black belt or may even have a brown belt teaching all the classes. With us you get much more than you pay for. We do have private classes available as well, please call for pricing.

I've invested thousands of dollars, pounds of sweat, a little blood and a lot of training time over the years to obtain my training, knowledge and ranks. I also have to pay building rent and business overhead. That is why we charge tuition that is higher than a community center or an instructor with a home location. GM Murdock
